Sand papers are abrasive sheets of paper
that wood workers use for creating elegant pieces of furniture. They come handy
for scraping off wood or metal surface to help paint or sealants adapt well to
the surface. 3M sandpaper sheets come in different levels of abrasiveness.
There are coarse grits and fine grits. Coarse grits have lesser number of
particles per inch and are used in the first round of sanding. They get rid of
larger, coarser particles and make the surface even. The fine grits on the
other hand have more particles per inch and are ideal for removing small
stains.
Types
of sandpaper
Abrasive sanding
sheets differ on the basis of the abrasives that come with the paper. The type
of abrasive plays an important role in determining which sandpaper will be used
for what.
Garnet: It is a natural abrasive and works well on raw, unprepared
wood. It removes the uneven surfaces and light scratches. The abrasive particles
break when they are used and so garnet sandpapers wear away easily.
Emery: It is another type of natural adhesive. They are used mainly
for sanding metal and remove rust and paint.
Aluminium Oxide: aluminium
oxide is a man-made abrasive that is used on wood, metal and plastic. Here also
the particles break during sanding and provide new, sharp edges for removing
material.
Silicon carbide: This is the one of the best sandpaper types and
gets rid of unwanted materials more quickly than aluminium oxide. This is best
used for rough sanding, paint and rust removal. Silicon carbide is also used on
drywall to smoothen joints.
Ceramic alumina: They are mainly used for power sanding and are
found on belts and discs. They are durable and last longer than aluminium
oxide.
