Check the earth resistance around your house with a digital earth resistance meter

Have you noticed a thick wire which comes out from the electric mains box and makes its way into the earth? Well, that is known as the earth wire. In the event of lightning strike or voltage fluctuations, excess current flows into the earth, thus saving your electrical appliances and fittings from getting damaged. To ensure that the connection to the ground is safe and reliable, electricians carry out a test with the help of digital earth resistance testers.

Applications of Earth Resistance Testers
The earth’s resistivity is not only measured when your mains connection is installed but also, it is used for locating ore sources, clays and gravel beneath the earth’s surface. The measurement is also done to determine the distance to the bedrock and the thickness of glacial drift. Earth resistance testers are also used to calculate the degree of corrosion in underground pipelines carrying water, oil and gas.

Ground Resistance Meters
Like earth resistance testers, ground resistance meters are used in many applications and offer a range of options to customize it for an application.

The ground resistance meters are available in two options. The first one is a traditional one which has stakes that are inserted into the ground. The stakes are attached to the main unit through leads. The current is passed through one of the stakes. When the other stake receives the current, the current is measured and the voltage generated is compared. The instrument then displays the system’s resistance.

The other is the Clamp on Ground Resistance Tester with Leakage Current.  This device allows spot measurements without the need of shoving stakes into the ground.

Things to consider before purchasing a ground resistance meter
Before you buy a ground resistance meter, decide the test in which you will use the device. Determine whether you need accessories like stakes for the test. Also, check the measurement range. You can buy digital earth resistance testers and clamp on ground resistance metres online at low prices.
